Curieuse

Dispute over ownership of Curieuse

Pralinois families ask government to show deed for Curieuse island before plans for the island’s future are approved.

By L. Valentino

Curieuse island jumps up the developments list with two proposed future developments. The island, which is a haven for the Aldabra Giant Tortoise and the Coco De Mer, may soon have two restaurants to accommodate the wide range of tourists visiting the island daily. However, a group of families on Praslin have initiated a battle to claim back Curieuse island which they affirm is their possession. Some of these family members spoke to TODAY, insisting that the land belongs to their aunt and was taken away from them by the colonial government.

The island in the past was being used to quarantine leprosy patients, for almost a hundred years. Today, the ruins of the leprosarium still stand on the shores of Anse Jose. The family, who says they own the land, claim that their relatives who lived on the island had leprosy. The latter allowed a part of the island to be used as a quarantine area.

They argue that the land was taken away from them for unclear reasons. They are therefore protesting and asking the government to show the deed of the island before any construction is authorised. Whether the land was bought by the government or not is not certain.

According to online sources “In 1967 a fire destroyed much of the vegetation on the island, including more than 150 Coco De Mer palms. Following this event, the government took ownership of the island and introduced various restoration and conservation projects. It is also explained that Curieuse was first used as a leper colony in 1829 and it functioned in this capacity until 1965, two years before the fire,” this being the only information available about Curieuse island.

Following these claims, it can be added that a set of regulations also projected for the island is in the loop. Destination management companies (DMCs) are urging for infrastructure for formal restaurants, while small operators have been providing their own catering services. These small operators, the licensed boat charters, who make their daily living transporting clients to the island are being affected by such developments. “Not being able to keep up to the high standards of the DMC’s, we are all forced to attend to their standards and lower our prices. We bring our clients on the Curieuse island and we prepare a nice barbecue for them. This is something the DMC’s are missing. They rarely provide barbecue,” insisted a boat charter owner at Côte D’Or Beach.
