Hello,

You can find a picture of the snake-meeting on:
http://www.silhouette-island.com/public/lodge.htm
This is the only picture I know from this kind of event.
Gruesse,
Guy

PS I have to be careful with my internet time because Kokonet does not want to give me credit like they always did in the past.

Hello,

No rain this morning to wake me up. During the night we had only 1,5 mm rain.
At 7 in the morning 27°C and 95% humidity. The whole day burning sun 31°C , blue sky and very very hot.
My leg is OK now, and I hope to climb to the landslide I mentioned earlier, but it is gonna be difficult, I think it is going to take about 3 hours one way, seen it is nearly at the ridge where it is very steep, and the path nearly impossible to find. (ask Silvia).
This morning I made a walk to the lodge. Al is still intact. The furniture in the bar as well as the bungalow chairs, even the cusions. The people from the kitchen are still in service as well as the women to clean the rooms. A few Sri Lankans and Maldivians stay in the bungalows making all arrangements to build the hotel in the near future. The start is normally early April, but seen there is a lack of material in Seychelles it could be later. The resort should be finished October 2006.
They will start building at the end of the flat area where now the dump is. The actual bungalows will only be put down next year. There will be more than 100 bungalows, 116 to be exact.
Strange thing is, is that the see is giving back, what it was taking during the last years. The sand that was nearly completely gone, endangering the takamaka trees is given back by the see. Even better, more than 4 meters of sand protects these trees now.
It is midnight now and still 28°C, a clear sky with thousands of stars.
Gute Nacht,
Guy
@Dirk
About the children’s book I can only find, the desk copy, but Jules told me new ones should arrive with Justin Gerlach next month. If you send me your address He will send it to you as soon as they arrive. You can pay me later.

Sunday13
This morning it was not the rain that woke me up, but at 5 o’clock the Indians started making music, and started singing, it seems to be part of their religion. Not the nicest way to be awaken. At seven they stopped so I continued sleeping until 8. At 8:15 it was already 30°C with a “luftfeuchtigkeit” from 76%. This night we had no rain at all. After the barbecue from yesterday I only had a light breakfast with toast and jam.
Today it is Sunday but the Indians are working till noon. They work 60 hours a week.
During the afternoon a catamaran sail yacht with 8 French people on board visited the island and the Nature Protection breeding program. Nice people.
In the late afternoon a boat from Mahe brought 25 more Sri Lanka workers, there are already more than 20 on the island, living at the old chicken farm. They are very shy and avoid any contact. They come to clean up the area where later the hotel will be built. Between 200 and 300 of these Sri Lankans are expected in the near future.
Richard a fisherman brought me more fish, and another one promised me more octopus tomorrow.
At the Dauban mausoleum one of the tortoises escaped, it was quiet a job to bring him back into the enclosure.
I will be happy that it will be Tuesday because I am running out of beer. Terrible for a Belgian, but also for a German I suppose.
It was a marvellous but lazy day with a 32°C temperature and 73% humidity at noon. Very sunny and nearly no wind.
Gute Nacht,

It was 7 when I woke up. 27°C and 93% humidity. It was a wonderful morning. A clear blue sky, no clouds at all and a very calm sea. This is really the weather tourists are hoping for.
At 9 o’clock 31°C and 70% H.
Someone who is still working in the hotel came to me and told me that the Mauritian living in one of the bungalows with his wife and child, captured a few hatching baby sea turtles and kept them in a container. I promised me to release them at high tide. When I returned early afternoon they were still there so I took the container and released them in the sea.
In the afternoon a three mast sail yacht visited Silhouette with 14 passengers on board, Germans , Austrians, French and six Dutchmen. Jules and I guided them around, Jules the English talking me the French.
Around 4:30 in the afternoon it started raining for about half an hour.
The people on the yacht are going to make a nice tour during 4 weeks bringing them to the Amirantes, Desroches, Alphonse, Cosmoledo, Astove, Farquhar and Aldabra, and return by plane.
At 11 in the evening 26°C and 88% H.

Hello, here I am again,

Adam, the biggest and oldest from our giant tortoises woke me up at 6:30 while he was mating with Josephine, one of the female tortoises. Every time he “pumps” he makes a noise like they cannot make it in the best porno film.
It was cloudy with a rather low temperature from 25° and 94% H.
Today a cruise ship “The Island Sky” should visit the island it should arrive around 9 in the morning, and when I went to the harbour to welcome the passengers, the typical Seychelles bureaucracy started. When the island manager saw me, and asked what was happening, he said the 55 passengers could not come ashore because he did not receive a fax from the IDC (Island Development Company) confirming their permission to land on Silhouette. I took contact with the ship and they answered they asked for permission a few months ago. Than I telephoned the IDC on Mahe and they told me the fax was already sent before New Year to the office of the Silhouette manager. So all 55 passengers could finally disembark.
Unfortunately it started raining and this for the whole day. No sun at all. The youngest passenger was 70 years old I think.
It is a frustrating job 55 people, split in two groups to guide around the village in 3 languages. The nice thing was that I was invited by the captain to come on board to have lunch.
I was happy that only 10 passengers came ashore in the afternoon.
The young people I met the first day to monitor the sea turtles at Grande Barbe arrived and should be replaced by others. But the weekly boat did not come, so they had to return to thr other side of the island. At six the boat did arrive but these people were already on their way back…
It feels good to be alone again,
It was a nice surprise to receive a message from Silvia. Thanks again Silvia und Ralph.
I just finished dinner and I am so tired that I immediately go to bed.
So it was a rainy day with 36 mm rain during day time, for the moment 26° and 93%H.
Gute Nacht,
Guy

We16/3
This morning weather returned to normal. At 7:00 27°C with a humidity from 93%.
A blue sky and just a few clouds around the mountain top.

This morning I was supposed to go to Anse Mondon to see how the house looks like, seen some English volunteers are coming next month to monitor see pollution in that area.
But it was impossible to get the key from the island manager because we first need the permission from the IDC. So I called the IDC, and they need a request first for the volunteers to stay in that house. We only wanted to ask permission to stay in that house if we were sure the house was capable to receive visitors. Why should we ask permission if the house is a ruin? We have to wait and see. This cat and mouse game took my whole morning.
Around 3 in the afternoon a catamaran sail yacht anchored in front of the harbour.
2 German men came to my place and asked for a guided tour on the island. An hour later 10 men came ashore and I showed them the tortoises, our information centre and the Dauban mausoleum.
Today was a wonderful day, sunshine from morning till evening, with at noon 32° and 29 at 8 in the evening.
I am very tired and go to bed now, without dinner,
Gute Nacht,

Th17/3
Another beautiful morning. At 7 am. 26°C and 88% humidity.
The 10 German men came back ashore and brought me 2 big sausages and a packet of small ones. I guided them along the church and the school till the end of Anse Cipaille and back.
They asked if it was possible to buy beer in the local shop, but unfortunately this is impossible.
These men, they come from Bayern, were very generous and gave an extra donation for the “Nature Protection Trust”.
Richard, who was the former dive master at the hotel, invited me to join him during the afternoon to go fishing. We went about a mile West of Grande Barbe, and with, for Europeans, rather primitive material we had a great catch. After 3 1/2 hours we had 6 red snappers (bourgeois) from which the biggest weighted 24 kilos. You can see a picture from Richard with his catch on my website:
http://www.silhouette-island.com/public/lodge.htm
It was a great day, plenty of sunshine with a maximum temperature of 32° and nearly no wind.
I have to go to bed now, I am tired.
Gute Nacht,

This morning I had an early phone call from GVI to go to Grande Barbe to tell the people there to take all there material with them because they were not going to be replaced in the near future. Salmar, the boat that should have come on Tuesday arrived around 10, with a few people from IDC, like Jimmy who was the island manager in 1999. The public telephone, at the harbour, out of order for several months, is replaced by a brand new one.
Some parts of the harbour wall that glided into the water, need to be repaired. Therefore a ship arrived on Silhouette with a crane on board; to fix it. Some big rocks from behind the hen houses, next to the guest house are going to be used for that. We don’t know , or they gonna use dynamite or a drill.
Seen it was another beautiful and warm day29°C at 7:15 in the morning and 32° around noon with a burning sun, I walked until Anse Cipaille. A lot of sand was given back by the sea, so this beach is much wider than before. Sri Lankan workers are clearing the area in the neighbourhood of the road that joins Anse La Passe with Anse Cipaille. Here they are going to start the construction of the 6 luxury presidential suites from the new hotel. You can sea a picture of this spot on my website. http://www.silhouette-island.com/public/lodge.htm
It feels great to be at Anse Cipaille. It is a nice and deserted beach, I was all alone there and it made me thinking. I was sitting there for more than an hour in the shade of a palm tree. From time to time it is good to be alone and sit and think, and the best place is a beach like Anse Cipaille. You can see a picture of it at the same web address.
During the evening I was talking with Jules till 10 and went to bed.
Today was a very nice day with temperatures above 30°, no rain and nearly no wind.
Good night,
Guy

Again a sunny day 29° at 7:00 in the morning, no rain this night, but more wind than the previous days.
I decided for a walk in the mountains, hoping to see chameleons. It was warm, but I was hoping that the wind should give me some refreshment. I was walking to Jardin Maron or even higher to see the land slide. When I arrived at the small pool after about 2/3 from the path it started raining very heavily. As far as I could see it was only in this mountains, above the sea there was a bright blue sky. As a refreshment the rain was very welcome but after 20 minutes the path became very muddy and slippery. As I was alone and afraid to fall again I decide to return, and try the path direction Grande Barbe. When I reached the glacis, just across the small river, the sun started shining again. I had lunch there, watching the fruit bats in a tree in front of me. A “pizon olande” blue pigeon or Alectroenas pulcherrima joined me and gave me the opportunity the make a picture from her. I examined all the wild pineapples hoping to find something special but without result. On my way back I added some lime that I found to my drinking water which was a welcome refreshment seen the wind I was hoping for, is absorbed by the forest. When after a walk of 4 and a half hours I arrived at La Passe it was very warm, and they had not seen any rain. The Blue Fin was in the harbour with day trippers, having bbq. I was invited for lunch what I accepted with pleasure. Grilled tuna fish with all kind of salads and “lentilles”.
When around 6 p.m. I took a shower, I was frightened when a Centipid walked around my feet, when it bites it hurt a lot. Instead of killing it I tried to catch it, what I did.
In the evening we had barbeque again with red snapper, octopus in coconut milk and bernique curry. Again a big centipid came from under the stairs, this time we killed it, and this same evening 2 more were killed. Very scaring.
We drank and talked till 1 at night and went to bed.
Bis morgen,
Guy

I woke up at 7, I thought it was by the rain. But the wind blowing in the palm leaves makes the same noise. It was 27°C and a strong North West wind.
Except for a swim in front of the house I did not do nothing special the whole day. It was really a lazy day.
By the heavy wind the clouds around Mont Dauban and Mont Pot a Eau were driven
South East covering La Passe the whole day. The sky above the ocean was blue as far as you could see , but Southern Silhouette was in the shade during the whole day.
In the afternoon I cleaned the enclosures from the tortoises, and Adam the biggest and oldest male we have, continued following me, pushing me to caress him. He needs a lot of affection, as soon he sees me arriving he lifts up his head and comes to me.
Tomorrow I hope to go to Jardin Marron.
Gute Nacht,
Guy

This night I did mot sleep well. I woke up at 6 after a bad night. My heartbeat was 96, and blood pressure 16 11. I decided not to go into the mountains.
AS I am leaving Silhouette tomorrow, the weekly boat to Mahe is on Tuesday, I called Georges on Bird to stay there until Thursday. I return to Belgium on Friday.
To be sure I also called the IDC to ask if the weekly boat is really coming tomorrow. But no boat tomorrow but on Thursday, so I have to stay two more days on Silhouette and no Bird this time. I will spend a few days more on Bird when I come back in June.
My beer was calculated until tomorrow but not until Thursday. The shopkeeper was so nice to sell me another crate of beer.
The weather today is a little bit like yesterday: a lot of wind, a blue sky above my head but the sun is hidden behind the clouds around the mountain top. North Island had a very sunny day, and in the distance Praslin and La Digue had a clear blue sky, as well as Beau Vallon.
People who have been in the hotel before probably know a young girl, mid twenty, that cleaned the rooms together with her mother. Her son from two was picked up yesterday evening by helicopter to bring him to Victoria hospital because he drank pure Detol. There is no news from him until now, but I hope he will recover. It’s a nice kid.
Glenn Savy head of the IDC visited Silhouette this afternoon to see the new school and the hotel project, he was flown in by helicopter. This is not big news for Germany, but here it is front page news.
He didn’t even visit the school, he just went to the hotel.
For dinner I had bourgeois filet that I caught this afternoon with rice, as I finished all my potatoes.
It is 21:45 now and 27°C an 78%H
Gute Nacht,
Guy
